La historia del 420: ¿por qué el cannabis tiene su propio día?

The Story of 420: Why Does Cannabis Have Its Own Day?

Every April 20th, cannabis lovers around the world celebrate the famous 4/20, a date that has become a symbol of freedom, culture, and community centered around this ancient plant. But... do you know where this number comes from?

🔍 What does “420” mean?

For many, 420 is simply a reference to cannabis consumption. It has become a kind of universal code to say "it's time to smoke" or to mark a shared cultural identity.

But its origin goes much deeper.

📜 It all started with a group of students: the Waldos

The story dates back to 1971 in San Rafael, California (USA). A group of five high school friends—who called themselves "the Waldos"—learned that a coast guard had abandoned a cannabis plantation near their area.

Every day, these friends would meet at 4:20 p.m. after school, map in hand, to try and find the alleged crop. Although they never found it, the phrase "420" became their code for saying: "Should we smoke after class?"

🧠 From a friends' code to a global phenomenon

The term spread thanks to the Waldos' proximity to the circle of The Grateful Dead, a cult band that had many fans in the cannabis scene. Little by little, 420 spread along the West Coast and eventually crossed borders, languages, and generations.

In the 90s, magazines like High Times began to use the term, and since then, April 20th (4/20 in Anglo-Saxon format) was established as International Cannabis Day.

🌍 And what does 420 mean today?

Today, 420 is much more than a time or a date. It is a celebration of conscious cannabis culture, of activism for legalization, of respect for the plant, and of meeting those who value it from a natural, spiritual, or medicinal perspective.

✨ At Smoking Mama, 420 is also a ritual

For us, 420 is a reminder of what cannabis represents: a connection to the earth, a pause in the noise, a moment of introspection or of meeting with others.

So now you know. The next time you hear or read “420”, remember that behind that number there is a story of friendship, freedom, and culture. 🌱💨
